Our recent Partners in Paediatrics Network Leadership Development Day, led by Ally Davies,Project Lead, Partners in Paediatrics & Freelance Improvement Consultant was a fantastic success, bringing together representatives from nine clinical and professional networks for a day dedicated to strengthening leadership, building connections and shaping the future of network collaboration.
Designed specifically for Network Leads, the day provided an opportunity to step away from day-to-day pressures and focus on developing the leadership skills needed to maximise the impact of their networks. Through interactive workshops, peer learning and practical leadership tools, delegates explored how to lead effectively across organisational boundaries, inspire collaboration and create sustainable networks that improve outcomes for children and young people.
Throughout the programme, participants explored both macro leadership—thinking strategically about vision, purpose and influence—and micro leadership, focusing on the everyday behaviours that create psychological safety, encourage participation and help leaders influence without formal authority. Sessions drew on established leadership theories, including Social Capital Leadership, Distributed Leadership and Adaptive Leadership, translating these concepts into practical approaches that Network Leads can apply immediately within their own networks.
The afternoon focused on developing high-performing networks, encouraging delegates to reflect on their network’s purpose, assess effectiveness across five key leadership principles, and identify practical actions to strengthen governance, culture, stakeholder engagement and long-term impact. Delegates also explored succession planning and how distributed leadership can create resilient, sustainable networks that continue to thrive beyond individual leaders.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for leaders from different specialties and services to learn from one another. With nine networks represented, the event created a rich environment for sharing experiences, discussing common challenges and celebrating innovative approaches already making a difference for children, young people and families across the region.
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with delegates particularly valuing:
A huge thank you to Ally Davies for designing and facilitating such an inspiring and thought-provoking programme, and to everyone who attended and contributed. The enthusiasm, openness and commitment demonstrated throughout the day reinforced the strength of our network community and our shared ambition to improve outcomes through collaborative leadership.
This event marks another important step in supporting our Network Leads to become confident, connected and sustainable leaders, ensuring our networks continue to grow, innovate and deliver lasting impact for children and young people.
